Schools for Haiti Project
Rev. Daniel Paul leads a church, girls and boys orphanages, and a school in Ouanaminthe, Haiti, all of which are all government accredited. Support and oversight are supplied by North East Haiti Lutheran Mission (NEHLM) – started by Rev. Sam Wiseman and two churches - Faith Lutheran Church, La Grande, Oregon and Lamb of God LCMS, Lake Stevens, Washington. Rev. Wiseman met Rev. Paul at the seminary in Fort Wayne. The Church in Ouanaminthe is recognized and in fellowship with LCMS and has received funding from LWML and LCMS World Relief and Human Care.
Two years ago, we asked Rev. Paul what the ministry could use help with the most. Without hesitation, he said a school. His goal is a school with 1000 students.
Since then, the Lutheran Womens Missionary League has granted them $100,000, and we raised $35,000 in the last two Detroit marathons. But more will be needed to complete the school, buy books, and pay teachers. Those who have been to Ouanaminthe have seen the joy and enthusiasm in these children as they recite their lessons, Bible verses, and prayers. The children and their parents know what a huge blessing this ministry has been for them. We have the opportunity to expand that to an even larger portion of the community. Not just helping them with the tools to thrive in this life, but also to learn about their one, true hope, Jesus Christ.
Over the last two years, we used the Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon event as our primary fundraising vehicle for our Haitian outreach ministry. However, several folks have said they're not runners. So for 2015, we are adding cycling and Peach of a Ride as a way to participate. If you're not keen about running but love to ride your bike, then Peach of a Ride is for you!
If running or cycling isn’t for you, but you're wondering if there's some way to help out, we also have several volunteer opportunities.
Please invite family and friends, or anyone you know who may be interested in being a part of this amazing project. Last year, many of the team members were participating in an athletic event for the first time and attempting something they never thought they would do, but were willing to step into the mix for a cause. We hope that you join the camaraderie of Team Trinity and help make a difference in Haiti.
The next mission trip to Haiti will be February 26 - March 6, 2016. We will once again serve the area around Pastor Daniel Paul's ministry in Ouanaminthe. This will be a combined medical and dental team, but medical or dental experience is not required. If interested, please reply to Mark Schroeder at email@example.com.
